Ever wonder what a tune-up on your vehicle entails and how to know if you need one or not? Most often, a tune-up consists of new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor (varies on models), fuel filter, air filter, and PCV valve. This is the standard “go to” tune-up; other items could be included depending on the year and model of your vehicle.

Tune-up intervals vary from one vehicle to the next. Older vehicles should be tuned every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or yearly, whichever comes first. Newer cars are scheduled to go from 25,000 to as many as 100,000 miles without needing a major tune-up. Check your owner’s manual to see what your manufacturer recommends for your vehicle.

Now that you know what a general tune-up consists of, how do you know if your vehicle is in need of one? There are a few things that you would notice that should raise a red flag that you are in need of a tune-up. Some of these would be:

  • Your vehicle stalls.

  • Your engine runs rough when at idle or when accelerating.

  • Your vehicle is hard to start.

If your vehicle has any of these symptoms bring it into your local Best-One® and let one of our automotive technicians take a look at it. You may be in need of a tune-up or other service work!
